Hi, We have a problem with my sister's medium-small garden pond (with fish) in London. The old pump/filter (at least 20 years old, probably 25) has conked out and the pond is going green.
The pond is irregularly shaped, basically rectangular but one side is kinked and tapers at one end. Approximately 2.5 m long by 1.15 wide, depth varies between .6 and .18. I estimate currently holds about 1500 L but could be topped up a bit more. It has a waterfall feature at one end, probably about 30 cm high. (I'm not there currently otherwise would supply photos.) It has six largish goldfish in it. Currently there are no plants in it, though there were some reeds until recently at the shallow end.
The old pump was a Hozelock cascade 1500, the separate external filter was a Hozelock Cyprio. The filter has been concreted in to the pond surround, next to the waterfall. The pump has completely stopped working and the filter appears to be dead as well, certainly not doing anything discernible.
Pond has now gone completely green after the pump (which was working irregularly) died about a week ago. About a month before that, the pond was cleaned out and given some sort of treatment but is now getting worse. Very concerned for the fish and hoping to take action swiftly if can get good advice. My sister has had problems finding a pond specialist to help in London, surprisingly.
I am completely ignorant about ponds to be honest but am trying to assist my sister. If it's possible to implement a DIY solution straightaway then that would be great. Alternatively will have to wait to try to get a professional in.
Feel free to offer any advice deemed appropriate but my main question is:
what sort of pump/filter should she go for? Looking into it, I was thinking that an all in one model such as that offered by Blagdon or All Pond Solutions would be effective and quick to implement but after doing a little reading I'm unsure whether that would be appropriate for a pond of this size with fish. A fountain would be nice but would also like to utilise the waterfall feature.
Is this the way to go and in which case, what size model would be required? Alternatively should we go for a separate filter outside the pond, in which case what brand/model recommended? Would be nice if we didn't have to concrete this into place.
Other questions: what is the best way to treat the green water in the short-term; do we need plants in the pond; can anyone recommend a pond maintenance service in North London?
