Rust in the pond?

DrDave, you mentioned last month about putting half a barrel in your pond to give the fish a place to hide. You did not mention whether the barrel was metal or plastic. Would a metal barrel (or any object of a ferrous nature) be a problem since it obviously would rust?

I was considering putting a wire mesh in my pond to keep the large koi away from my water hyacinths but large enough that the smaller fish could swim through and hide. I did not do so because of the rust issue.

Although addressed to DrDave, a response from anyone with an answer would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I was talking about a plastic or fiberglass barrel. No one should ever use a metal barrel for any reason around a pond.
