sand filter

I am using a sand filter on my 220gal koi pond.My question is what type of sand or gravel should I use in the filter.The filter works great using playsand with no silicone in it but it tends to clump up to quickly.Is there a certein type of sand or gravel to use:banana:

I saw on another pond website there were 5 people that used hair rollers instead of sand.So I took out my sand replaced it with rollers and pads and it has been doing great.Alot cheaper to

That's a great idea. Glad you found your answer Seems to be more questions on this site then answers.Shame the site has a great look & feel hopefully more people find there way over to here.
