So I will be using celotex board to ensure I have square sides and flat base/shelf etc when the boxweld liner is ordered. The insulation is a bonus, the previous wall was so out of square and poor mortar Im surprised it didnt leak or break apart years ago! So using pu boards with the new block and brick wall to sqaure the pond walls and base etc.

But, always a but, what is the best expanding foam to secure the board to block and clay?

I've seen black waterfall pond friendly foam that is rapid growing foam and also seen low pressure/low expansion foam.
Has anyone used either with good or bad results?

Also any places where there's a wide selection of coping stones? I want about 1/2 to 1" overhang to hide the liner top..making the coping stone around 30cm/1ft wide.

Thanks in advance,

Andy.

I would look for something else to use as an adhesive. The expanding foam products are manufactured for the purpose of 'sealing' and may have very limited and undependable results when used as an adhesive. And because it is expanding it may very well push your celotex walls out-of-plumb.

Fully understand. The snag is where the board meets the block work and concrete the join will be flush but below the level of the footings/foundations the boards will against clay, which is anything but smooth.

When they put the insulation board on the outside of my basement they used some kind of black stuff that looked like tar but had to be sprayed on .It was really sticky also .They used it also for the waterproofing membrane on the basement out side .Can't remember the name and wish I could .

Not sure but they put this stuff over it that had bubbles in it that directs water away from the foundation and then spray it again to put the insulation board on .I know it was really sticky because I had to just touch ,told not to but well I did ;).Had it on my fingers for 3 days of washing the stuff off my fingers .Even tried the goo gone and still there .I know it was also featured on a show here called This Old House .

It sounds like you have shimmed these pu boards (or will shim them where needed to make a square hole. One critical factor is the pu boards by volume are mostly air and I have seen them squeezed down to half their volume.

The best foam to use is that heavy 3-4 inch stuff with the heavy asphalt treated backing used to form up concrete walls that resist bugs etc. whatever you finish with get a dense foam. I've had the blue board and pink board in contact with the ground for years, and the ants came and set up housekeeping turning it into swiss cheese. https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/if-ants-like-rigid-foam-should-we-stop-using-it
that's what i found with the search for celotex specifically.

As far as putting them together ( If you decide to continue using them), tape will hold sheet edge to sheet edge, and the water pressure will push them outward holding everything in place so you're really just looking for a temporary support. clay sticks to clay real well. but any glue will simply pull away with a thin layer of clay still adhered to the glue---holding them vertical and in place for the time between their final placement and install of the liner I would just take 6inch nails across the top edge at critical places and drive them through the foam into the soil and then after the liner is settled and maybe partially full, go around and pull all the nails, they won't be needed after that.

If there are places where partial sheets are doubled up being used to fill in , just fasten sheet to sheet with any caulk type cement. Painters caulk even would likely keep the pieces in place long enough to get it done:)

Why can’t I see any content from @Ignored member? Is Ignored member really a member? Kinda humorous.
if you go to your name by clicking on it at the top right on the right side you'll see ignoring member click on that and it will show a list of people you put on ignore
