I built my own pergolas over my decks and I designed the plan then put shade clothe over it that I take down in the winter and it costs less than 200 to build and I did it myself

learned from my dad and on the way .Remodeled 5 houses in my lifetime and both my sisters kitchens down here .Built the boxes for them and the face frames and they ordered the doors .rebuilt both decks and helped build the carport and the front porch and built the guest house shed by myself .I never say I can't do it because I can and I will ;)

I will! :)

Going with Brown to match the existing posts. :)

This is what I've done so far. Installed the two at the back of the patio and mounted them to the existing 4x4s. Bolted at both the top and bottom. They seem rock solid. Used some massive 1/2 metal O rings with a nut for the sail to attach.

I took a small piece of one of the 4x4s, traced around it and used one of those vibrating osolating tools to cut. pretty close!

I need to fill in around it with some kind of epoxy. Suggestions?

Is that post penetrating through a fibreglass material?
What about using something like a rubber roof flashing for plumbing vent pipe?

Things I learned:

Its a lot easier to paint wood before you mount it.

Motorized Augers are your friend. Dont be afraid of them.

Mixing concrete in a bucket is easier than mixing in a wheel barrow.

Turnbuckles are essential.

Corded drills are required if you are mixing concrete with an auger.

Make sure your sail is at least 1 foot shorter than your polls are apart.

When complete happy dances are allowed.

Did anyone mention expandable foam for sealing around the post and roof? If the gap is too big, use screening to help hold it. Just DON"T touch it while wet. It can be neatly trimmed and painted after it dries. For a better day, wear gloves. :)
