Shy Koi?

I was given my first Koi for mothers day. He's extremely nervous/shy. Is this normal?

Yes, it can take days to weeks before they become adjusted to their surroundings. Is it the only fish in the pond or are there other fish? If it is alone it can take longer, but once it gets use to you it could become quite tame.

Koi also like to shoal so if it is the only fish in the pond at the momebt this is natural to cure it is simple buy more koi (hell I'm Bias) or goldfish the koi wont mind .

Thanks for the help. Yes, it is the only fish in the pond. Will have to get him a friend. Did have another small goldfish in there but it keeps burying itself behind the cattails and since I haven't seen it in a few days, I believe its gone to fish heaven.
