Size and flow rate of UV clarifier?

Here's what I have:

The bottom reservoir pond is about 35,000 gallons and it is lined with sodium bentonite. I have a 3/4 hp Artesian pump pushing water up about 40' of head through a 3 inch line and pouring into a 100 gallon stock tank setup "skippy style" which then pours into a homemade filter with interior dimensions of 32" x 80" filled largely with green poly flo media. It appears that my flow rate will be a shade under 5000 gph. The water flows out of the homemade filter then down about 50-60 feet of streams and through a pond that is perhaps 8000 gallons. It nicely finishes its circuitous route down my hillside by falling into the reservoir. I haven't turned the pump on to see the water flowing yet, but based on my previous experience with just the reservoir setup (and no water flow), I am assuming that I will have an issue with algae.

There are only minnows in the pond now, and I intend to keep it very lightly stocked with tadpole friendly fish in the future. I plan to install two Tees, one near the filters which would allow me to size the 3 inch line down to a smaller line to feed into the light. What I am wondering about now is what size if light should I purchase? Or perhaps the more appropraite question is: since it would seem I might need a few lights, is it even worth my time to consider using a light at all?

Any insight you can provide will be greatly apreciated!

If you've got bentonite in the water, it should really keep your algae in check. Why don't you turn things on and see what happens first. If you start to notice an algae bloom then try a UV. But that's the beauty of bentonite...I'd wait and see what it does first.

Welcome to the Forum!

A lot of us do not use UV and never experience the algae bloom. The secret to clear water lies in the bio filter, along with circulation (which it appears you have).

Why don't you try that first and save the cost of the light, electricity and replacement cost, not to mention the maintenace to keep it clean enough to do it's job.

You can always add it later if you don't succeed without it.
