How often do you folks clean your Skippy filter? I have had my 110 gallon filter with green scrubbing pads since 2002 and I seldom completely clean it. As I recall, the people who started these filters do no recommend ever cleaning it. Is that accurate?

I don't on a regular basis, but try for once a month. Well, actually, I don't think you are supposed to "clean" it. But I will open my bottom valve to let the that's settled at the bottom drain out. At this time I'll pour a few buckets of pond water over the media to rinse off any crud that has settled actually on the media. I have primarily Matala pads, cut up PVC pipe, and Bio-Balls in mine. Those all let go of the crud pretty easily when rinsed.

Every filter requires cleaning eventually. Frequency depends on several factors including the type of media used.

The most I have done is about what Mmathis said. I sometimes remove the yucky pads and clean the mud from the bottom of the stock tank, although not nearly once a month. I was just curious what other people do. As I wrote, the skippy people say don't ever clean it.

We clean our filters three times a year spring (late) summer and then the last time in your late fall that way your filter is running at its optimum best throughout the year

Same as Mmathis. I open the bottom drains on mine to do the weekly water changes and depending on how the water looks coming out, may dump buckets of water over media about every 4-6 weeks. Spring start up and before closing down for winter they get hosed out completely.
