Skippy style filter

Stupid question. What is the difference between a skippy filter and this:

The inlet is on the top and it is a gravity flow pump.

one major difference is size, Skippy filters are designed on somewhat similar basis. But use a large stock tank for filtering and can house floating plants in the top to help reduce nitrates. The tetra filter is designed on a closed system and that whole filter might hold 3-4 gallons of media.

Like fishin is stating the more gallons of media the better the filter will be, the better it will work. And you can layer different types of media.
