Some Questions on Filtration

About six weeks ago, I got my grandfather's 250-gallon pond up and running. I installed a Danner Pondmaster 2400 GPH pump along with a Pondmaster 2000 Garden Pond Filter, which is a 12 x 24-inch flatbox filter with biological and foam inserts. In addition, I treated the filter with Microbe Lift 16-Ounce Pond Gel Filter Pad Bacterial Inoculant and also added Evolution Aqua's Pure Pond Bomb.

In the pond, I have three goldfish, each around 3-4 inches long, about 10 Japanese Trapdoor snails, and a variety of pond plants, including Hornwort, Water Hyacinth, Mosaic Plants, Water Poppy, dwarf sag, fairy moss, mini water velvet, and duckweed. The pump and filter run continuously, and I’ve also added a few aerators.

I’m wondering how often the filters need to be cleaned. Will cleaning them remove all the beneficial bacteria? Should I consider adding a small pressurized bio filter? I’d really appreciate any advice!

Filters are usually cleaned once a week. If you see build up of muck on the filter pads before the week is up, clean them. There is no hard and fast rule. Cleaning more often is better than letting them go too long.

You won't wash off the beneficial bacteria. It's there to stay, as long as you clean with dechlorinated water and use no chemicals or soap to clean them. Just rinse them off in a bucket of pond water or use a hose if you have well water.
