I replanted my hardy water lilies last year after they failed to grow as well as they did the first growing season, but I'm wondering if I should've done something differently since they seem kinda puny again this year. I bought the water lilies from Lowe's and they did amazingly well the first year but quickly outgrew the pots I had them in. I bought some fabric pots and aquatic planting media and replanted them with a fertilizer spike in each fabric pot but they haven't come back as well as I had hoped. I am wondering if I should take the tubers out of the "mesh-like growing bag" (I really don't know what else to call them..) that they came in and replant them in the media? I didn't do that last year because I didn't want to hurt the plant, but could those mesh bag thingies be restricting their growth?

I'll attach some photos so you can see what I mean by "mesh-like growing bag thingies" LOL

I would take them out of the smaller mesh bags, and plant directly in the pot. It could be restricting them abit, although eventually they should push out of those bags. Also, when planting the lily put the cut end up against one side of the pot with growing tip facing into the middle. This way it will take the lily longer before it grows acrss the pot.

Yup. Get them out of the bags. It's pretty hard to hurt a hardy lily tuber. You just want to have at least one good growing tip. Put them in a nice big, shallow pot - more like a pan than a pot, actually. They like to grow across the pot, so the more space you can give them, the better.

I haven’t had the time to pull the lilies up and get them out of the mesh bags and into the aquatic planting media but they’re already growing so I’m not sure if I should mess with them now. Any harm in going through with the plan or should I wait and see!?

I mess with mine any time, growing or not. They might slow down a bit but catch right back up.
