Surprise spawn

We moved into a house a couple years ago that has a 5000 gallon pond with 6 mature koi, maybe 12 years old.

Late this July we were surprised to find that spawning had occurred. At this time, there are about a dozen fry left, each about an inch long. We haven’t done anything special since spawning, and the fry seem quite healthy.

We’d like to keep maybe two of them, either cull or give away the rest.

However, we’re new to the whole koi breeding game, and unsure if we should be doing something special this winter if the intention is to keep two fry. Normally we just keep the bubbler going to break the ice and let the mature fish go dormant.

Thanks.

In my experience fry born in the pond are pretty hardy and do just fine over the winter.

Keep the bubbler toward the surface you don't want to disturb the water toward the bottom of the pond.
