Thinking About Making A Small Lotus Pond

I love lotuses. I want lotuses in my existing pond but it’s just not set up for it.

Is planting some in a half wine barrel (with pond liner) a reasonable idea? Or, should I forget about it because it’s a pain?

Would love a “how to” guide if anyone knows of one. Most importantly: where do I get lotus plants? Location: Northern California Central Valley. Hot summers, windy, non-stop sunshine. Water features/ponds have greatly fallen out of favor here due to West Nile so no local source of the plants.

Thanks for reading!

Lotus can be grown in containers as small as 10 gallons. I start mine in 5 gallon buckets and have had them bloom 1st year.

I would stay with plants medium height as large ones can get 4'+ in height. A lot of people use " unscented kitty litter " from Walmart for the planting substrate. works great . Try " pondlotus.com " and "thepondguy" for more info. Good luck

Yep kitty litter from Walmart, no additives, the clay kind in a big bag, cheap, works great for all pond plants. They say it is good for the pond water too so if some gets spilled just let it ride! It will cloud the water for a bit but that settles down and does not hurt anything.

Getting ready to start my batch of seeds from last year. Don't know if any of my plants survived this crazy weather so 2-3 dozen seeds will fill my ponds plus can go to locals wanting pink lotus!
