Trouble with skimmer set up

Hello everyone I've been working on a new pond set up all summer / autumn
Just got the fish in about 2 weeks ago
I have fitted a skimmer to my liner ,then dug a hole in my filter house so that my evolution aqa 10000 is below the water line but when I turn it on it doesn't seem to suck water from the pond ,its connected correctly as I've been using it in my holding tank ,I haven't fitted a non return valve ,when I turn it on I get a surge of water then that's it & get e4 reading on the control ,any help will be much appreciated. At the very least pictures would help - your description is kind of confusing. If you put a skimmer box on your pond, that's where your pump should be, so I'm not sure why you're digging a hole elsewhere? In your filter house? Or are you using this as an external pump - I think this one allows for both?
