Um...there's a worm in my pond plants

I just noticed that the soil in my mare's tails has started to look like yarn. And I saw a tiny red worm wiggling through it squirting out the soil, which is creating the effect. Is this good or bad for the plants?

And the problem is that the worms are pushing all the dirt to the surface, which then falls into my pond.

I would doubt that the little worm is doing the earth-moving [though it could be -- just saying,,,,]. Do you have fish? My bet goes to fish digging for a wormy snack!
