Is there an easy way to determine the difference between koi and goldfish fry? Obviously letting them grow out a bit is the easy answer. I watched both my koi and goldfish attempt to spawn this spring but we had some massive temp swings that killed off any eggs or fry. But today when I was doing some cleaning I saw a bunch of these little guys! There must have been a second spawn recently but I’m just not sure which fish did it. Most of them were this dark color but there were a good number of them that had a brighter colored patch or shiny color to their back…I’ll try to get a few more pictures tomorrow.

initially I’m leaning towards goldfish but I’d like to hear what you guys think.

That little guy is big enough to tell, but you would need to catch it to be sure. Looks like a goldfish, usually tell by their mouth positioning goldfish are more straight on while koi are more downturned. Can usually tell even at that size when I see them in my pond. Like GBBUDD said you will know for sure in a couple months.

Quick update…100% goldfish fry. They are all growing very well and hiding in the weeds…although I will need to net them out and find a new home for most. There are easily over 40 that have survived. So far only one has started to change colors and is getting a little bit of orange and whit on its side…it’s also the biggest of the group haha. I did tell the kids that they can keep a few in a tank in their room.

okay now, we have undeniable proof you skirted the whole 'birds and bees' thang with the pond; DON'T do the same thing with the kids, capiche?
