We were rearranging some babies today and was able to get an updated pic in a smaller container. I was wondering what the "blah brown babies" would do... the "brown ones" than started with some black coming in... and most of them had some funky looking big scales on their tops and sides that came one at a time... I finally know what all the "blah brown" ones are:) Some have normal scales, but most of them are Doitsu:) Ki Matsubas (I THINK)... We also wanted to know how big they were getting. The bigger picture in the tote is one of the mid sized kids (the only one who would stay still as not to blur the pic LOL). The reddish guy is a younger Shubukin...The one being held is one of the bigger Matsubas... Not as pretty as the other one, but wanted to grab a pic of the scales... The last pic just shows what the one being held looks like in a normal position LOL. We have 9 of these, and only one is a butterfly (with some gin rin scales too, along the dorsal fin), and will get a pic of that one when we move it. It's my favorite of them LOL. "Breeders" would probably call them bottom of the barrel blah still, but I like them LOL.

Good looking babies CW, The three in question I think are more Midigori or Doitsu Ochiba. I bet the Gin Rin really looks cool! They really don't look Matsuba to me in the pics. But I know pics and looking in natural light can have quite different views. Also I don't know if you know this or not. When your breeding koi and you get a mix lot, some can be called one thing when young and be called something entirely different when grown. I didn't know that for a long time and really only learned that they can do that recently. Butterfly koi are known for making these drastic changes quite often. I like that bright yellow Ogon or Yambuki too, I've actually been looking for another one of those with some metallic sheen. I had one I really liked and it had a deformed lower jaw and I didn't notice until it reached about 7"I ended up rehoming it during the move to the new place.

Thanks Larkin... the last 3 pics are of 2 fish... just the one pic of the fish on the yard stick, and the last two pics are another fish... both have the same style of scales, but the one on the yard stick has "neater" scales, and better yellow (the other fish's yellow is very muddy)...

I was thinking they were Doitsu Ki Matsubas... I found several on ebay, with the exact same markings, with the exception that those listed either had zero, or just a couple of scales along the lateral line... but I thought Doitsu, in addition to the zipper on the back, were allowed to have scales along the lateral line? I'll have to look up the ones you mentioned... my Japanese is still awful LOL.

My favorite isnt a "real" gin rin... just a stripe of gin rin scales on either side of the spine. It also has normal scales, not doitsu

Thought I had a good pic of it in my lap top when younger, but cant find it... these two pics show the butterfly in the upper corner... look for the yellow stripe on the lateral line under the black saddle, and white fins... The yellow nearly covers the face now. These are the oldest babies (koi, shubs and comets) when they were 2-3" ...

Also, all those who look like gin matsubas in these pics are nolonger white on the face. They are bright neon yellow through muddy brownish yellow and a couple look like they will head orange...

Oh, and Ive definately notice young fish can change in color. I bought one guy when it was 5-6"... body was totally white, with a nicely defined doitsu black zipper... body is still mostly the same, but has faint metalic grey along the lateral line... the face was white, with just a hint of black, similar to the black on a matsubas face... and its face now looks like black satin at 11-12"...

Only one I "REALLY" see the matsuba in is the white largest one in the upper left hand side. I see several Doitsu, some midori type, some Kikokuryu Here are some examples of true Matsuba http://www.ebay.com/...=item3a7ba802ad http://www.ebay.com/...=item2a251ff9f7 http://www.ebay.com/...=item3a7c1ff8f0 Now these are suppose to be Kikokuryu, http://www.ebay.com/...=item2c6a1bf0fc http://www.ebay.com/...=item3a7c10b4bc http://www.ebay.com/...=item27cc6c72e5 Now these are some that I think you have https://www.google.com/search?q=mid...gTskoCICg&sqi=2&ved=0CC4QsAQ&biw=1034&bih=619

The one you are calling a true matsuba, I have a fish EXACTLY like this one, same color, same pattern, but a butterfly... yes, it IS a Matsuba, but it is a DOITSU Matsuba.

Mine are not like the second link at all... totally different scale and color patterns (not just the actual color, but the pattern).

The ones I am calling Doitsu Matsuba are more like these...but with a complete lateral line of scales as well (scaleless in between the two rows of scales)

and the ones I am calling normal matsuba look more like this...

And I have several adults like these (both standard fin and butterfly, regular scale and doitsu)...
