Using EDPM products on Butyl and vice versa?

Hello :)

Just wondering if anyone has experience of using products for EDPM (e.g. the Elevate/Firestone seam tape and other products) on butyl liners. I wish I'd thought about this before I built my pond in butyl - there's a lot more primers/seam tapes/adhesives etc out there designed for EDPM than butyl! I know they're linked materials in terms of chemical composition and behaviour, but I don't want to spend too much money experimenting, so thought I'd ask you wise folks!

I have successfully used Innotec Adheseal on my butyl liner, and unsuccessfully used butyl cold (mastic-style) tape. What I'd really like is to be able to use Eevate Quick seam to add a new section of butyl liner, but not sure if that's a bad idea!

Basicly these are the same products tapes being either cured or uncured rubber. The uncurred having very similar properties to butyl. Now not knowing what exact material your pond is the primer for epdm and the self adhesive seem tape that they seĺ today should do the job for you. But seeing as we cant be sure after priming and patching of its longevity id look at seaming / patching over the edges of the patch you just installed. Putting that first patch into a cacoon a state of suspended animation sorta speak . This way a seam needs to fail before it gets to thr seam that is the last defence.
Ps make sure to round your corners. Its criticaly important not to have 90 degree points on patches

Thanks for your insight, it's reassuring to hear you think the edpm primer and tape should be compatible with my butyl liner.

And don't worry, I've read your guides to patching and seaming, I would never dare to use unrounded corners!

I just did an ai search for the topic and it confirmed what i believed the cover tape is often more so than not made from butyl. So it will definately work. Just make sure you have good primer/ glue. And you thouroghly clean the surfaces. Water is often all thats needed but products like alchohol, gasoline. Anything that wont leave a residue behind works. Using a green brillow pad helps.

Just as an update, as both GBBUDD and AI suggested, the Elevate edpm products that I used did indeed bond well to my butyl liner. I used seam tape (Quickseam) and primer (Quick Prime Plus). The only trouble I ran into was that the primer dissolves Innotec Adheseal pretty rapidly, and since I have used that elsewhere in my pond it was extra important to plan the seaming path carefully. Likewise, it was necessary to ensure all the primer had properly flashed off before I ran a bead of adheseal to protect the join.

Obviously no way of knowing now if the seams will fail earlier joined to butyl than they would with the edpm the products are designed for, but here's hoping not!

As i have noted inbtge sticky o. Seam8ng epdm. For those who are new. Or even that want to be a 1000% SURE THE BOND HOLDS. and i did this on my own pond is after you seam that area is to place seam tape over the first seam. So each edge will be covered and now it has to fsil before the first seam even sees water. so lets say tge extra seem only lasts 5 to 10 years so that has given the last line of defence that long before it has to work on keeping things watrr proof.

Glad to hear things went well for you
