Never changed the water on any of the other 3 ponds I had, all had fish, all were healthy, water stayed clear most of the time. All where just biological filters, i.e. rocks and plants.

Ever since I've had my pond, I never did water changes after the Spring clean out. But this year, we went from winter to summer and the pond got kinda funky looking and smelled when the weather warmed up. So, I did do 3 water changes this year. I did about 25% each. Usually I just top off.

I always do some frequent changes once winter is over with and the pond thaws, but after that I pretty much stick to top-offs. Never had a problem with water quality or clarity.

mostly just top it off here, i flush my filter about once a week, at 50gal i guess you consider that a water change but with a 1000 gal pond its only 5%, i add more due to evaporation.

and i thought most on here were water changing advoacates.

If nitrates are high, I will do a water change. If the temp is extremely high, and the weather man shows no relieve in site, I will do a water change. Otherwise just top off.

It is easy to do more when it comes from a well and the only cost is pumping it.

In So Cal, we are on water rationing and there are very costly penalties for using more than what Big Brother tells us we are supposed to use. I actually got a letter spanking me for my usage once.

I have a small leak in my bog filter and stream, was going to fix it but decided not to since I can just fill it up every two or three days, we are on well water, plus we have a good irrigation system that we can use. It only goes down maybe an inch a day, no biggie.
