Hi - this is my first post, so my apologies if I get it wrong. I've got a new garden pond (about three months old) in SE England. It is starting to get populated by all sorts of things, and this morning I found this little beast swimming around several inches under the surface. Can anyone help me to identify it? Thanks in advance.

It looks like a tick, to me!
I think it is a water mite: http://arachnerds.blogspot.com/2012/03/aquatic-ticks.html, so yes, it is just a fat tick that happens to live in the water. They are usually red, but clearly nobody told this one what colour it should be.

can't disagree with others on that one, how big is it? based on the picture it looks fairly large, and I haven't seen a tick that large well, ever!

Looked up ticks in UK- several look just like that
It was about 3 mm long, not as big as it looks in the pic

yup, then it would be a tick, just looked like 3 inches or something in the pic
