What kind of turtle is this

Removed a turtle from some wild ponds to prevent it from breeding wondering what kind it is. It’s been able to survive a winter in the uk so definitely hibernating

There are no native species of turtle in England and they wreck havoc on local plants and animals one type is even illegal to buy breed or sell now

That is an interesting fact that I was not aware of.


I did a google search on one of your photos and google suggests its a River cooter. I do not know whether or not that is accurate, but it looks similar at very least. If you have twitter, consider asking @AlongsideWild. He typically IDs snakes but he works with turtles so he may know.
