I think it turns red if you have a new message and doesn't just say what # of messages that are new but says all # of messages you have in your box. I just happened to see it red and clicked on it and saw a new message in there. Said #38 but only had one new one.

I had to go in and delete a bunch of old ones now it shows no messages on the box, even though there are still some in the message area.

ime liking the new look also, havent tried everything yet but ile get used to it ! its just like when they change facebook at first your unsure of it but then you get used to the new layout you wouldnt go back to the old one, changes and updates are usually always for the better

I kind of liked the old format. Not complaining, its just I would rather learn something new for my pond and not have to figure out something new to get the info.
