White Residue Around Aquarium Pump Housing

Tonight I discovered white residue along the top edges of our Beta's Aquarium pump and filter housing. The only clue is that I changed recently to spring water. Any ideas about this residue? Btw, it was easily removed with a wet paper towel. One other note our Beta has been spending time up by the pump inlet. He never did that before.

Is it a mineral deposit, from the water, or something different?

If you are using spring water it is most likely mineral deposit. You could try changing to distilled water.
