Why did my last fish turn colors?

The last set for goldfish I had in my pond (R.I.P.) all turned from orange to red while they were alive. Is this natural? Have you seen this?

I have one five inch Sarrasa comet in with my seven Shunbunkins that the orange on it's back has gradually changes to to a dark orange almost red. As far as I can tell, my Sarrasa is doing quite well, and looks healthy.

I can't even imagine why your gold fish died without knwoing more about your actual pond conditions. Sorry.
