I have had a pond for years. The largest is my current pond which I built to try and make it look as natural as possible. It is l-shaped and has a waterfall. If it was straightened out it would be 6metres by 3 metres and 1.2 meters at its deepest. It had 7 koi and a survival specialist ornamental gold fish. Two miracles have occurred. For the past 3 years the fish have produced babies. I now have 24 fish. There is one which is a gold Koi and the rest are black with lovely shades oof copper and gold on their underside. I didn’t know they would do this.
The next miracle has been the clearing water. I had an Oase filter system and UV light which was connected to a large capacity in pond pump which had a variable control. The pond was never clear, and full of blanket weed which we removed religiously. The pump was shorting out so I put my trusty oase pump which can handle far less volume. I placed the pond on the plant shelf, because I wanted to keep the circulating water going through the filter and it is extremely handy to clean there. Over the years I have tried every new-fangled things to clear the water. There are mature oxygenators in the pond and two large lily plants, I have a skimmer as well and we scoop up all the detritus. But last year another miracle. The pond just cleared. In mid summer. Granted I am in Northern Ireland but we do get sun (honestly). I thought it was the recent rainfall. The only thing that I have done over the past 2 years has been to install a filter for the topping up of the water in hot weather. But I can see to the bottom of the 1.2 metre part, the fish stock has increased and my pond has become really beautiful. What did I do right? I am asking because I am about to move house and will be digging a new much bigger pond. I would say too that there are over hanging trees and lots of mature shrubs and ornamental trees, but they have always been there in the 10 years of this pond’s life.
