I just got back from my cousins and someone had given her some water lilies from a fish pond but they are huge and have an arrow shaped leaf along with a huge looking flower pod where the blooms woud be. Never seen anything like them but googled wild water lily and that is what they are I guess. Just curious if anyone on here has them and how they do or are they a no no for garden ponds. Thanks

For hundreds of years hibridisers have gone to some lengths to create hybrids which are substantial improvements on 'coarse' native waterlilies. More attractive blooms, better bloom to pad ratios, better growing habits, less inclined to smother a pond with a mess of foliage, spread and choke a pond, or to dump prolific numbers of seed willy nilly...

Arrow-shaped leaves??? The only wild 'water lily' with even remotely pointy leaves would be Spatterdock, also known as Yellow Bull Lily, and probably a few other local names. The pads are rather heart-shaped, and often carried above the water. Flowers look like yellow golf balls, and the plant prefers somewhat deeper water than true water lilies. Google Nuphar luteum for more info or pictures.

They can be a bit invasive, but as long as it's not a mud-bottom pond they are easy enough to control.
