I have a Hozelock filter which in the main does the job, however when I turn it off for any reason, the return water seems to suck back into the chamber which in turn agitates it, so the first couple of gallon that comes out when I switch it back on is very cloudy. Is there an obvious fix for this other than discarding the first couple of gallon?

How about placing a check valve so as the water starts to siphon back to the pond it shuts the flow down. It's sounds as the flow is simply back flushing .

Thanks for the reply, yes that's a potential easy fix, I'll try that.
