My questions are .. Can goldfish and koi interbreed?? And do/or will they eat their own eggs / offspring ??

We saw in our first 'goldfish only' 100 gal pond that they tolerated the frogs and their eggs and tadpoles (but we never got offspring it it) .. In the new KOI pond , no eggs / tadpoles and we get dead tree frogs in the pond if the koi catch them ... Early this past spring we found one koi with a dead frog 'stuck' in its mouth , too big for it to eat I guess .. we made it 'spit' it back out and we have scooped out several more dead tree frogs since then ...

Last year we had 1 baby goldfish 'appear' in the new pond .. That surprised us , for some reason I thought the pond wasn't big enough for reproduction .. its appx 1000 gal pond ... The 1 from last year is totally orange and seems to be a goldfish ...

We noticed more new babies last week , we think there are 7 - 8 ... several are orange and white and some look grey/blackish ... I thought we only had 1 female koi (thewhiteone) because last year the other koi all seemed to be 'following' 'her' constantly ... it appeared to be mating behavior ... :cheerful:

We have 4 goldfish and 6 koi ... the goldfish we've had for appx 5 years .. we got them when we built our first 100 gal pond ... The koi we've had for 2 1/2 years and when we bought them they were 5 - 8 inches long , I assumed under a year old?

Sorry to be rambling ..

Thanks Tammy

they don't care about size or what kind of fish .They just like to make babies that hide and then appear from no where

I know this is an older post but...for newbie ponders a "warning" of sorts to allow room for their fishkids future kids! ...lmao yup sissy they sure do do that!! I believe my fishkids made around 50 mini's of themselves! I have 1 shubunkin, goldfish and comets (total 10 adults). The babies are all kinds of colors, from black (future goldfish) to double and triple color babies :D (see photo). I'm guessing the 2000 gallon pond we built the "elders" inspired them lol

lol it gave them room to drop eggs that were not found and eaten ==== babies! Nice looking babies too! My 1000 gallon tank has a lot few babies then the big pond, not as much area to hide the eggs from hungry adults.
