Are you talking about in a pond or large aquarium?

The only time I use charcoal in the pond is in bags when I have a "tannin" problem [and it takes LOTS of it!]. The issue with charcoal would be that, for pond use, to do any good, you'd have to use a lot of it, and it has a limited life-span and can't be re-charged or reused. Picture the filters for aquariums that are disposable.

im planing to use it on my 900 gals. pond
my set up would be from the very floor of the filter

1st: small rocks(bigger than pebbles)
2nd: charcoal(wood)
3rd: small rocks

would this be ok? or do i really need sands?

I'm not even sure I understand that last post with the crazy punctuation etc.
I would skip it.
If you're set on using it it should be after the mechanical filtration, not between it.
And I don't think I'd use barbeque charcoal.

I thought all charcoal had stuff added to them .That's why I had to ask and looked online but could not find 1 that did not have something added to it .That's what gives food more flavor than a gas grill
