Our pump is 4800 gallons, and we did away with the old filter (self-designed and sadly not working quite right), and we replaced it with a pool sand filter (specifically Hayward S244T Pro Series Top-Mount 24-Inch Sand Filter with 1-1/2-Inch Vari-Flo Valve). Very easy to operate, the sand acts as a mechanical filter as well as biological, and we have 100 liters of kaldnes media in our waterfalls, and a bunch of bags of lava rocks in there, to boost the biological filtration as well. Seems to be functioning okay.

We do a 10-15% water change per week (we have drip irrigation 4/gal per hour). We're going to wait a few more weeks to see if there's any more improvement in the water clarity. :) It would be nice to see our fishies more often. ^_^
