Just have to maintain the wood . I know I am having to repair splits and cracks in my front porch and restain it . So far II have used a whole container of durhams water wood patch . before and after . Repair the cracks when they happen beccause water will make them expand more . I learned the hard way . If you can find it where you live it is a great investment . Lots of sanding work for me . 6x6's were really bad . My pond has wood ontop of concrete blocks and bridge . Half above ground half below ground

Sissy a far better method is to use BONDO whoops didn't see you were staining. But a quicker way to do cracks is to caulk them then run your finger over them . in beding the caulk a little then once dry apply the rock hard

I used crapp bondo on my back decks and it looked terrible and did not last . It fell out of knots and splits . It does not expand like water wood putty . I have used this wood putty for a long time . But for awhile after moving here from NJ I could not get it here . It expands and contrats with the wood . It is cheaper and great indoors and outdoors . I buy 4 pound container for under 12 dollars after taxes . It is pwder so goes a long way , but when you mix it you have t do it in small amounts because it dries fast and hard
