"Viviparous" seems to be a type of night bloomer that will tolerate cooler climates. I won't bother planting anything I have to mess with during the winter. I am waaayyy to lazy for all that.
I like the "sink or swim" method. Hehe
We stay pretty warm down here but I'm not sure it qualifies as "tropical". I've got to do more reading before spending the $$ on a night bloomer.

My step father always said "adapt or die" I guess that comes in handy only for certain situations... lol
Research is key! good luck on your search for the perfect night bloomer :)

@tbendl WHAT is that lily and where did you get it from? It's gorgeous!
I just ordered it from pond plants online. That's where I got my lotus as well. I'm so excited!!! I got some smaller bog plants coming as well.
And look! I planted some of the flowers around the pond last night before we got hosed with rain.

I see here that they want to ban totally in ground ponds in flood areas because of fish from them getting into lakes and streams during flooding from heavy rains .Can't blame them for that .

That makes sense. Sad but it does make sense. I don't get flooding, when we get heavy rains I get a little runoff in the back part of the yard but no flooding.

Bedford lake and Smith Mountain Lake have had major problems here with fish from flooding or people dumping fish from ponds they don't want .

Thanks Cas, I'm so tickled with it. And the liriope in the middle is supposed to get purple cones of color in with the grass.
The next project will be grass but man seed is expensive!

Liriope blooms later in the season, it does get nice purple flowers.
I have not found a night blooming lily that is not a tropical. I have a friend in Georgia, she leaves her tropical in the pond and they survive the winter. She even gets a bit of ice on the pond.

You would probably be ok with them. Start with one see how it does over winter.
