yikes! 1,500gallons missing.

woke up. pond looked peaceful as ever.
made coffee. drank coffee.
looked outside: pond almost empty.
pump recycles water every 45 minutes, so in 40 minutes pond emptied.

duh! day before, i put two hyacinths in pool above waterfall. hyacinths floated to edge, and the roots covered flat stone to waterfalls. water backed-up, of course, and overflowed from pool into ground.

no damage. whew!

but made my heart skip a few beats!

Water hyacinths rapidly replicate and are notorious for clogging anything up. Beating a dead horse again, water hyacinths are illegal in many states for the very reasons I listed.

are illegal here in california, too. but not much enforced if unlikely to get into natural waterways.

i have seen waterways in florida! not nice.

Glad you caught it! Plants in the pond have to be watched just like any other garden plant. I just pulled almost 15 lbs of watercress out of my stream, bog, and waterfall yesterday. The root mats that it makes are pretty incredible, and capable of stopping water better than any dam. The plants themselves are pretty tender, but pulling the roots up is like taking up glued down carpeting! I left a few pieces still growing - we'll pull that much again in a few weeks. I should put a stand out in front of the house - Watercress for sale!

i have hyacinths: 15 for $10.
here in califonia, i needed quick pond cover 'cause of sun. pond only 2 months old.

will replace once find source for other water plants.

was lucky this time: still had 1' water in deep end. fish saying: "wtf?"

Before my accident caused problems with my walking Lisa I helped my friend Brian on his pond where we had to remove weed that took two of us to lift when it came to their roots and covered half of the pond , since we did however it became a wildlife haven for frogs and newts as well as the few goldfish that had managed to survive .
It had even caused the concrete damage thankfully a leak we could plug .
