Overview
More than ten years, this sunk tub pond is about 350 gallons. Its about 4' x 3' x 3' oval. I try to keep a few small, or only 1 large fish to reduce fish waste and the need to clean pump frequently. I had KOI but they grew too large so I stick with small fish. I have some lovely frogs this year for the 1st time in a few years. My pond water can become too pH low, from lawn chemicals when the work crew gets too close. I aerate year round and add a de-icer in 28 degree and lower weather to prevent solid icing. I use water hyacinth floating plants in summer. A large plastic garden pot saucer floats for fish to hide under and frogs to sit on. Because my pond is under a 150' oak tree canopy, I have a wood and chicken wire box frame to use for fall and winter. It keeps leaves out, but birds are attracted to the water sound and get trapped and must be released. It also keeps herd deer from drinking the pond nearly dry, which happened once! In early Spring I cover the box (top only), with a black tarp to prevent sunlight which causes pea soup green water. I can remove tarp as soon as leafing occurs. The copper cranes prevent real cranes from coming in to dine. They were a $$$ solution but have worked! I have to check every day, as I get painted turtles that can't get out a few times a summer. I tried a board bridge but it was used by marauding cats and raccoons. You never know what you will find IN and around the pond. When cleaning the pump I think I have discovered new lifeforms!
Planning and Construction
I started with a plastic kidney shaped pond kit, but it was shallow with 3 pockets, and not deep enough in the middle where the pump was, for fish to winter over. I wish the plastic horse trough I switched it out with was larger but it was as big as would fit in my SUV. Plus, a limit to what a gal solo could excavate. Occasionally, I have had to bail it out and do a full or partial water change, and then I'm glad it isn't any bigger!!!
Fish / Plant Stock
Carpe Diem the 10 yr old goldfish succumbed to swim bladder disease, now 1 small koi and 1 small goldfish . I rely on water hyacinth- a few provide shade and roots for fish to eat.
