Overview
We built our pond in May 2013 using rock acquired from our property (still can't believe no fingers or limbs were lost..). We positioned pond directly in front of our kitchen window and family room in attempt to maximize enjoyment. It consists of a rubber liner and ranges between 3-4 ft. During the first year we did a DIY filter using a 90 gallon garbage can and gutter filter foam from Home Depot as media. Despite having all normal water parameters (zero nitrate, etc), and happy koi, we subsequently replaced filter this past spring with a GcTek filtration system and also removed gravel from the bottom in fear of impending doom from nutrient buildup. We currently have 11 koi (lost one to herring and another has battle scars from such-see puncture hole in pic below). Areas for improvement this year will be to focus on water clarification and better koi protection + growth.
