Pond is too deep

I have acquired a 1/4 acre pond, 12' deep, very little shallow area. It is pretty much stagnant, accept for run off. That goes over the bank, to a creek. I also believe there may be a small spring in it, the water level stays pretty consistent. I plan on installing a waterfall for aeration and circulation. And possibly pumping water from the creek, for more circulation. I'm told there are bass and blue gill, and maybe catfish. I would like to stock yellow perch. Before I do that, I want to expand, by digging out a shallow area for spawning. After all of this, my question is. Can I push dirt and vegetation into the pond to add a couple feet to the bottom?

Hello and welcome!

Can you post pictures of the pond and the area surrounding it? Pictures help us a lot.

That’s a pretty deep pond, but small in surface area by comparison. So, are you planning to dig it out more in width and length to make the shallow area, and that’s the dirt you will push back in?

How much water is required for optimal growth for the fish you mentioned? Also, if it’s part of a natural watercourse, are there any local regulations that you’d have to follow?

Nice big pond and I hope you can get it up and running so it can be a nice addition to your property. I would perhaps worry about stirring up the water too much w/all that dirt and veggie stuff pushed in there so that it might hurt the fish. I don't know tho, just guessing. Would be great if you could get lots of good circulation going first before you start pushing stuff in there. I suppose something that big would you would not be able to find a filter big enough for it or it would be too costly. Maybe make a bog filter?

Thank you for the reply, I've done some more research. I will not push the vegetation in, but dirt eventually. I also have lots of rocks i can throw in,, but,, i like landscaping with rocks.. I plan on expanding the sides, to create spawning area. And a bog filter. Lots of plants. I have found a spring about 30' higher than my pond, about 500' away. I think I may run landscaping hose, to have a constant source of circulation, no matter how small it is. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you, no vegetation. I've learned that would be bad. Dirt and rocks. Longer reply in next post.

The hole was dug to make a hill for a mobile home and septic. He said he dug till he hit bedrock. The previous owner says the creek filled it up. But the creek is 3-4' lower.

Its not part of a natural water course. It is a hole that was dug. And filled with water. I believe a pond this size, 8-10' deep would support 100 3-4" yellow perch. That number may be high, but I plan on harvesting a lot.

What am I talking about. I've already got a bog. The picture may not be very good. The bog is to the left. Dig the shallow part between them, and pump from the pond. Why didn't I think of that!

Better pics a hope the bog is 30' away from the pond. I can dig 800 sq' or more, at 1-3'. Thanks for letting me think out loud.

Wow, what a deal, a ready made bog and all you have to do is connect them!
