THe main thing is that is has not got worse! And I also agree with @Tula that reading Koiphen might help. I reckon that something damaged it and it is slowly recovering. It takes ages for scales and skin to regenerate in fish. I assume it is still feeding ok and swimming around ok?

Yes still swimming and eating. It is the smallest of the older goldfish - it does hide a bit behind the pump from time to time.
