I have been reading for the last two days and I still dont know what I am looking at here. I know they are mutts but I would like some help IDing these, What confuses me on IDing these is that I dont know if the fish on the left (names Lipstick) is white with orange or orange with white. How do you know which is the primary color on multi colored koi?

Also can you please tell me what you think the 2 in the bottom pic could be? I have included two pics. THANKS!!!!!!

The pictures are really hard to get a good look, But I'll make an attemp on two. the third I simply can't make a call due to the pics. The one you call lipstick to me looks like a Hariwake, If It has really large scales or no scales it would be called a Kikusui, It is more orange based or red based with white, so It wouldn't be a kohaku, and it really doesn't look like a Kujaku all though it has a perfect face for a really nice one IF the Kujaku pattern was on it's back. It does have really good body confirmation and although still apears kind of young it has the look of possibly being female. By the way It would actually be call a Kuchibeni (The red lipstick) Hariwake.
Now for the fish in the bags, The tri color is a Sanke. beware, that fish will not look the same in 2-3 years. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this fish doesn't change to a two color or even single color fish. The fact is, there is no telling what it may do either. it could turn white with black, which I'm kind of leaning toward. the beni or red on the head could stay, but it has the look that it could easily fade as well. the beni on the back, I doubt will be there very long. The sumi (black) on the other hand has some underlying and developing. With you being so far north and probably cooler water the Sumi (black) may get better as it ages.

Hey! Thanks for giving me so much information. I will make sure to keep track of this when they age more. I have only had the fish in the top pic since June 4 2012. They definitely doubled in size since we had them (most likely a bit more). I am noticing today there is more of a burnt red orange look to Lipstick mixed in with the orange on its back. I see there are a few scales that really shine in the sunlight as well. I wish the pics were better but I use barley/peat in the water and it has a brownish tint (makes the water look a bit dirty though). Thanks for all your help. I will be googling the names you gave me and will research further!!

Correction on the above post since I just got my package today... I bought Drs Foster and Smith Super Food (not dainichi). I got something I did not order so I need to return that now.

You know I don't think we do but that is a great idea! You know there are differences in what one person will call a fish and what another will. Mark (Koiguy1969) has a orange and Black koi that is very similar to one I have. Yet with both go by two completely different names for them. I know exactly what fish he is refering to when he talks about her. That's is what counts IMO. Mutts are harder to place a name to, But most usually do fit into one catergory or another.

I found a site with pics but I still cannot identify because mine are mutts/mixes so I get really confused....

http://www.koivillage.com/koiid/pg2.htm hope i am not violating board rules....

no rule broken in fact Thank you for posting. I had seen that site in the past but hadn't looked at in in a year or so. WOW, they added some new ones and added some more updated examples of more modern bred Koi. Oh how I wish I could find something that even looked close to some of those!
