Wish I had a pic or diagram. Pond liner is in and am working on the false-floors for the turtle side of the pond. This area is approx. 4' x 10' and 1' to 2' deep (slopes). The edge is slightly shaped like the top of a heart -- one lobe is for the "boy" side, and the other lobe is for the "girl" side. The cleft is the dividing line where a cedar picket fence will go.

If I were to scrap my false-floor idea and convert this area to a bog, could I do it and how? It's already lined, basically ready to be filled. Would I have to elevate the area (so it can overflow into the main pond)? Need construction HELP!

Just thought of something else. How deep should the water level above the pea gravel be? If I wanted to have an area that was deep enough for the turtles to soak in, it would need to be 1" to 2" deep. Would it be possible to have a wall within the bog that would let you have a deeper area? I would like for the turtles to have access to the entire pond, but would also like some deeper water, graduated, maybe.

Look these three links over, 1st one is Addy's, second one is Todd's, third one is mine. Lots of great info, pics, and ideas. If you look at my bog I have a stream in the bog. All the turtles love it in there. the one thing you MUST watch out for is using plants that are turtle safe. as you know they could bite a plant at any given time so of course you'll wwant to use plants that are known to be safe. BUT there are plenty plenty and in fact many natives will do great in the bog and your boxies will know natives and which ones they can nibble on. I have water that is between 1" and 4" deep in my bog streams. Boss likes to get in the 4" deep water and just sit there for a hour or so, Hoss will NOT get into the deeper water, He prefers to dig a hole in the pea gravel and sit in about a 1/4"-1/2" of water. he never uses the same hole twice either. Dozer the succalta doesn't like to get in the water, he likes to go to the streams get a drink and then finds a dry rock to bask on. It's fun to watch them and they have gotten to where I can leave them in there now for a hour or two while I'm out there. Just have to check them from time to time so they don't get out and go wandering.

TM what did you decide on your bog? I really like the bog that I built, it is smaller than I would have liked but it works for the space that I have available. It should be fairly easy in converting what you have now into a bog. All you need to do is put a pipe in the bottom with a bunch of slits, fill with gravel and your done. The hardest part was cleaning all that gravel.

We cleaned two or three wheel barrels full then just dumped the stuff in. The amount we had to clean was just too much, so gave up.

I'm going to wait on the bog for now. I am too far [physically and financially] into the project I'd already started. I'll see how the false-floor thing goes and make a decision for a possible renovation for next year. I'll still have lots of plants.
