Hello From The Sonoran Desert!

I know I should probably be growing cacti and succulents -- But my lifelong obsession is water gardening. The brutal heat of the Desert Southwest USA is quite a challenge! Some days it's like trying to grow waterlilies and lotus in a hot, bubbling spa - and I've poached more goldfish than I'd like to admit...

But I'm living proof that you CAN watergarden inside a toaster oven!

i dont get it if in the desert where's there's little chance of freezing for more than a few hours why not get tropical lilies?

At one time I lived in Tucson. Yes, a lot of heat but we could get winter nights in the 20s/30s - always needed to be prepared. I now live in 'high desert' elevation 5000'. Hardy lilies only, we have many nights in the 20s/30s.

I live in the high southwest desert. I'm amazed that the koi and goldfish live through very hot summers and very cold winters. Yes, I also have a hardy water lily (yellow) that survives along with the fish.
