Discovered this forum when I was searching for answers regarding a leak I have. Here's my situation:

Lost some fish over the winter and was given a suggestion to salt the pond which would kill any parasites. Dosed with 1/3 the amount of salt (diluted in water) and got up the next morning and the pond water was down over halfway. Read that salting can cause small cracks etc. to leak......my pond guy says he never heard of that.

I shut off the pump and filled the pond all the way last night. This morning no water loss so assuming the leak is in the pipe from the skimmer to the biofalls - no evidence in the ground. Have walked the stream and no evidence of water loss from there. Turned the pump back on and refilled to the top after the stream etc. was filled up......that was 3 hours ago and no water loss??? What the heck?

We lost a lot of water in 12 hours with no evidence of where it went and now the level is down less than 1/4" after 3 hours.....

Thoughts?

Had some fish loss over the winter and my pond guy suggested salting the pond which would get rid of parasites. Dosed with 1/3 the amount diluted in water and got up the next day to a pond with over 1/2 the water gone.

I googled it and found information that indicated using salt could cause small cracks, etc. to start leaking. My pond guy said he never heard of that.

I shut the pump off and filled the pond to the top last night and there was no water loss this morning. Did some more looking around down the stream and along the sides for any evidence...none...turned the pump back on and topped off the pond and 3 hours later it's down less than 1/4".

Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!

I have had surprise water loss, usually a low edge, deer stomp on a edge etc

Never heard of salt doing that.

This morning the level is not lower. There's some white bubbles/foam floating around.......
This is so weird - we lost so much water-can't find where it went and now it's fine?

Weird this happened! No idea why it would then suddenly heal itself. Be on the watch as if it happened once it could happen again. Could a large animal have stood on your stream liner during the night and pushed it down and then once it left the liner rose up? Grasping at straws here, lol!

Parasites like fish go dormant they are at the edge between life and death in cold temps. parasites general are not an issue untill waters start to warm again
