Hi all,

New to sustaining a pond and feel I got an ok setup. However I have noticed one of goldfish getting white spots. I asked the fish shop where I purchased them and they said that it's likely just exposure to the sun (sounded odd, but not knowing enough I thought ok) as none of the other fish seem to have signs of the same condition. He recommended building more hiding areas which I have, and He then proceed to up sell on some friendly bacteria and skin treatment/conditioner for the fish.

It appears as if it could be getting worse and not sure if this is an isolated fish issue or could lead to the bigger ones getting sick.

Please see photo attached.

Thanks in advance!

One possible answer would be fish pox. It is quite common in Goldfish and is usually a result of poor water quality. When did you last run a full series of tests on your water?

Is fish pox related to water temperature? Might it improve with warmer temps? Or am I thinking of something else?

Nope, you are thinking correctly. The symptoms normally disappear in warm temperature, but may return again when temperatures fall. The virus remains in the fish, but dormant. There is some disagreement in the Biology community as to whether or not it is easily transmitted to other fish with the majority advising that it is communicable.
Sadly, like all other viral diseases in fish, it is non-treatable. There is no known cure.

Myer is indeed correct with the diagnoses of fish pox however it does disapear with temperature normally after your pond raises above that of 10c s to if its catching I'd say you'd be unlucky if it passes to anymore of your fish. as viruses go hs is a non comunicable virus and is fairly weak
Where we differ in diagnoses is that it should over time cure itself and its down to the fish to do this basically you haven't that much to worry about with fsh pox

Ok, so I take it to him leave as is, and just continue to monitor the water with testing? I tested the water in January and it was only high in ph(which I leveled out). Everything else was in range.

Or take him out?

As your ponds temperature goes upwards you'll see them disapear , I know of only one koi that kept his pox the rest grew out of it the same apples to their cousins the goldfish as Maria has said its safe to leave him in the pond as they infection rate is nigh on 0% .
They dont leave any marks and as such your goldfish will not be scard for life by it .
Byron a really good book for you to buy that will explain about many illnesses Parasitic attacks etc is as follows
The Manual of Fish Health ISBN 0861013869. Dr Chris Andrews Adrian Exell, Dr Neville Carrington.
This book was the very first fish health book we ever bought and it turned our hobby around completely over night so to speak I strongly recomend you buy one , they arent that expensive and can be bought via Amazon Books
