hiacynths and or lettuce may be o.k as long as your fish arent too large.. mine left my plants alone until they hit 12" - 15"....and if they are that big or eat the plants....

Algae control is best done by a good biofilter - I don't use UV myself. I have seen it used with a Laguna pump, and it adds to the dynamic head too much for my taste.

Hyacinth grows faster than any other plant, even kudzu. It filters very well, and when it gets too wild, makes great compost.

Don't have much experience with submersible pumps yet, I'm designing a smaller pond for just goldfish where I'll be using a big Laguna. Next spring.
