Does anyone cover the intakes on their pumps to prevent fish from getting sucked up? If yes, what do you use?

Mine is external. I put a 5 gallon bucket around the intake with a ton of 1/4 inch holes drilled in it. That reduced the suction over all, I don't find critters in the leaf basket of the pump.

I know this is an old thread but here goes anyway.
In the past I bred a lot of chiclids and had a large 5000lt grow out pond for the little fella's and had a bit of trouble to start off with fish getting sucked up into the filter. I put the pump inside a milk crate wrapped in 90% shade cloth and it worked a treat.
Cheers
Ben

Window screen works also but both can clog and cause the pump to over work .I got laguna pump because they come with a full cage that goes over the pump and are energy efficient
