I love my elephant ears and brought some of them from NJ house .There all I did to protect them was put a couple of bags of mulch around them and mulch on top of them to protect them from winter .I really want to get more varieties .Now I am into bananas and cannas.I like the black ears,I just hope the polar vortex did not harm them .I mulched them real good

Thanks. I am more of a gardener (mostly subtropicals and tropicals) than a pond gardener but I am slowly learning lol.

Nice photos sissy. Some kinds of elephant ears are much more hardy than others with some even being able to take zero degrees. The most important thing for these hardy types and most kinds in general when its cold and the bulb is dormant is that the bulb remains on the drier side. Cold and wet equals chances of rot when they are dormant. If they are actively growing they usually love water!
Same rule goes for bananas but bananas don't usually tolerate actually siting in water as much as the colocasia EEs do.
There are many decorative types of bananas that are hardy down to zone 7b and some even a little colder zones.

can't wait to plant my elephant ear bulbs. I've over wintered them in my crawl space the last two winters. I'm curious is any I left in the ground will survive this frigid winter......time will tell:) Kim
