The other day I cut down the plants in the pond for winter. The new fish that did not see me do this last winter became very scared. The old fish in the pond that saw me do this last year did not and behaved very normal. Is this my imagination. RDK

I'm pretty sure all fish have a memory. We certainly see it in the behavior of the fish in our aquariums. The goldfish in my pond used to always come to the surface when I was out there, but after a couple Summers of predators fishing, they're now scared of almost all movement beside the pond. I'm hoping they learn again that people are safe, since I finally worked out how to give them proper cover (this is the first year I haven't lost any fish).

Lots of floating plants, and a half-barrel sunk to the bottom that they stay under. I think the main thing is making them less obvious from the sky and nearby trees.
