The relationship between ammonia and algae is interesting. Before a pond a pond is fully cycled and able to naturally eliminate ammonia, algae plays a huge role to keep the ammonia in check. Yet so many people on this forum are worried about the appearance of algae in their pond and they don't recognize it's benefits. I can always tell when my cycle is working because the algae that was living off the ammonia virtually disappears overnight.

I didn't know about the high protein food causing issues. I have some high dollar koi food someone gave me. High protein, sounds like it is not the best for my Goodies. Never have a ammonia issue. I need to read it again.

I posted on a food thread here, asking if keeping fish on the spring / fall diet in the summer would be of benefit, as it's lower protein. I looked and my wheat germ based food is 32 % and the summer one is 38%. Not sure if that's a big difference or not.

Very interesting, especially the part about the algal crash. That may be why we hear of fish deaths after use of the algicides.
