Large shallow tub with a small amount of sand in the bottom, maybe a few water lettuce. 4-6 hours of sunlight. NO FISH. It will grow like crazy. then just then out and put in your pond for the fish to enjoy. Hornwort BTW is a favorite food for BOTH goldfish and Koi.

Thanks for your quick response. Will be putting together this set up tomorrow and will let you know what happens. Do I need to add any type of fertilizer?

no need for fert. I would use pond water. and change about 25% every couple of weeks with pond water. the water from the pond will usually feed oxygenators just fine. You may want to try Cabomba, Little tougher plant, Like our area, can be found in waters along intercoastal canal. can handle some salt, and produces oxygen very well. Oh and it blooms too. Tiny yellow blooms. I prefer it over Hornwort as it winters over better as well.

RDK my goldfish nibble................I should say devour would be a more correct word to use on the duckweed and Anacharis, mostly. They don't seem to bother the other plants but I don't have every plant in my pond. I have seen them nibble on some of the lily pads that turn brown but not on the fresh green ones. They are way better behaved then most koi especially when the koi get huge.

How many tons of that stuff do you need? There is a state park about 5 miles away that I used to get that stuff by the bucket loads for my fish tank. Its a old strip mine and the water there is super clear. They stock it with trout during the winter. Koi and cichlids love that stuff.

Do goldfish eat plants? yes Like koi do? NO Goldfish nibble in most cases they are going after very new shoots or plants that are breaking down. In Most ponds the plants would grow far faster than the goldfish can eat. Koi, different story, prefered plants are just a salad mix. LOL Some goldfish do like certain plants to snack on and they are really good for the fish when they do.

Small tubs, whiskey barrels, old bath tubs, kiddy pools, even preformed ponds off of craigs list. anything that can safely hold water can grow oxygenating plants if the water is warm enough. Most of the US region should have at least some growing season.

thanks everyone for all the comments. My goldfish and koi seem to enjoy munching on my hornwort and anacharis. The koi, unfortunately, also enjoys my water lilies. The few times I have been able to get duckweed, my fish go nuts. I will try to get some duckweek and try growing a supply with the hornwort to keep them happy. Happy fish, happy Cajunmeme.

brandonsdad02, I wish I could go and get some from you. I recently purchased a good number at $2.50 a bunch. And when I say bunch, a very little bunch.
