I am in New Jersey , zone 6b -7 . My pond project is circular at 6ft across 3 ft deep. close to 700 gallons. I plan on doing several goldfish and pond plants . I will put a fountian in the middle and an aireator .I'm thinking now after reading alot of posts that I should dig deeper to .3 1/2 ft . because it's a full sun location and I'm worried the fish will overheat in the summer and stress in the winter. The pond does get afternoon shade . Can anyone share your expiriences with depth ? and thaks !

Mine's about 3&1/2 ft deep but we don't get as cold or hot as you do. I would say the deeper the better to keep them cooler down under in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Laughing, know that feeling. Make it deeper than 3.5 feet you need room for the padding and liner.............

thanks you two, I'll dig to 3 1/2 ft. and not an inch more lol ! (getting tired of digging and nowhere to put the dirt !)

Make the dirt into a nice waterfall mound, hills around your pond.............. Raise the edge around the pond, make it a little above ground, deeper without digging

falling in while empty or while full? If while empty go get some yellow stay away from here tape and put it round your hole on some fence posts or something.

I made a copper fence around mine when my first Granddaughter was born
never had a issue she climbs on it ,but shes controllable
My raised pond edge is 2ft high she climes the rocks to get closer and feed the fish
I'm a little more relaxed with her now . My second will push me this summer
