The one thing you may want to think about is your pond looks great, from your pictures, it has been working fine with the moon rock, you may want to leave it and maybe add some more filtration. Why remove something that is working?

That's a really nice pond. addy is right, if it was there for a while it might be beneficial to the pond. If you are just starting out I would do a little as possible to change things in the beginning. You have the whole winter to educate yourself while your pond is dormant. I would think you could ask the Realtor to find out some info from the old owner. As a Realtor and builder people sometimes call me even 10 years later to ask me questions. If it only takes a few minutes I am always happy to get them the information they need.
